Licensed Centre Based Child Care (167) Centre based child care centres are licensed by the Ministry of Education, regulated by the Day Nurseries Act and are staffed by Registered Early Childhood Educators that are regulated by the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators. A balanced program of activities for infants, preschool and school-age children is designed for children at different stages of development. Children learn and grow while making friends with other children of the same age.

Home Child Care (4) Home child care is provided in a family-like setting for infants, toddlers, preschool and school-age children. Children from the same family can be cared for together, often in their own neighborhood, and close to school and friends. Hours of care can be flexible and may be adapted to suit the needs of individual families. There are regulated and unregulated homes. Regulated Child Care Homes are part of a licensed Home Child Care Agency and must follow regulations of the Day Nurseries Act. These regulations cover care of the child, behavior management, nutrition, health, sanitary practices and the handling of serious occurrences. Furthermore, regulated homes are routinely inspected by Home Child Care Agency staff and the agency provides training, support, supervision, administration, and "matching" between families and caregivers. Independent or unregulated Home Providers are not part of a licensed agency and are not monitored nor must they comply with the Day Nurseries Act. The only law that covers independent people caring for children in their own home pertains to the number of children cared for. A person may not care for more than 5 children (unrelated to them) at any time.
